Obituary
Annie Simon Bazile was born January 20, 1919, to Walton (Walter) Simon and Christine Lewis Simon of Beaumont,
Texas. On the afternoon of December 30, 2024, at the age of 105 years and 11 months, she answered the Lord's call and peacefully entered the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Annie married the love of her life, Johnnie Bazile Jr. In 1938, they moved to New York City where they lived and worked until retirement. Annie worked in the shoe manufacturing and automobile
convertible top manufacturing industries for many years with no pension. Occasionally, she would complain, "The unions came after I retired."
Annie often spoke fondly of her cousin Mildred Brown, her sister-in-law Alma Bazile, and her good friend Lawyer Mason who helped her get settled in New York. Annie and Johnnie loved going to New York's Apollo Theater where they enjoyed performances by many artists who would later become famous, like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Benny Goodman. She often sang her favorite song, "Pennies from Heaven".
Annie loved good soul/creole foods like pig feet, boudin, tripe, hog crackling, neckbones, ribs, and pork chops, to name a few. It makes one wonder how she was able to live nearly 106 years given this type of diet. However, in her own words, "Be kind to everyone, respect everyone, love everyone, and always find a reason to smile is how you do it". However, laughingly, she had a few selective creole words for her caregivers when they did something she didn't particularly like.
At home Annie loved flower gardening; she especially loved roses. She had a special place in her heart for three earthly things: her beloved Johnnie, her beautiful daughter Mary, and her parish, St. Bonaventure. It was with the help of her friends at St. Bonaventure that Johnnie converted to Catholicism.
After the deaths of Johnnie and Mary, Annie returned to Beaumont in 2008 at the age of 89. Over the next sixteen years, she entrusted cousins Levoris and Helen Roy to provide love, shelter,
nourishment, clothing, and medical care.
Annie is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Johnnie Bazile, her infant daughter, Betty, her beloved daughter, Mary White, and her only sibling, Willie Mae King.
She leaves to cherish her memory: cousins and primary caregivers, Levoris and Helen Roy; Paternal first cousins: Harry Simon, Viola Roy, Agnes Collins, Edmar Simon III, and Martha Boxie; Maternal first cousins: Barbara Ann Journet, Roosevelt Lewis Jr., Pearl Roy, Vernice Lewis, Michael Lewis, Craig Lewis, and a host of other relatives and friends.
