Mr. Henry Edison, III
Life Story
Henry Edison III was born on January 30, 1948 in Beaumont, Texas to Bessie Mae Wells Edison and Henry Edison, Jr. He attended Pipkin Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High School, and was a proud graduate of Charlton-Pollard High School, class of 1965. He then enrolled at Lamar University.
He married the love of his life Martha Marie Edwards in 1972, and to this union was born two children, Jada and Terrell.
Henry accepted Jesus Christ into his life at a young age at St. James United Methodist Church and began what became a lifetime commitment to God's work. Serving in leadership positions
beginning at the age of 20, he would later lead as Chairperson of the Stewardship Committee, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and the L.A. and Annie J. Simmons Scholarship Committee. He served as President of the St. James United Methodist Men, as a certified Lay Leader, on the Administrative Board and Council of Ministries. Henry was a dedicated Sunday School teacher, St. James UMC Cub & Boy Scout Master, and Vacation Bible School Teacher. As a member of the St. James Mass Choir and the Men's Chorus, he dedicated his rich baritone voice to glorifying God.
Henry began his career at Mobil Oil in Beaumont in 1968 as a Process Operator. He decided to return to Lamar and earned his degree as a Mechanical Engineer in August 1976. He was a proud member of the Lamar University Alumni Association and GT-TAME (Golden Triangle Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering). In 1977, he embarked on a lifelong career at the DuPont SRW Plant in Orange, Texas, starting as an engineer and advancing to Process Engineer in 1980. In 1985 he was promoted to Area Superintendent Plant Services from his role as a Production Supervisor. In 1990 he became a founding member of the Sabine Black Network Scholarship Drive Committee, integral to raising money for deserving students in SE Texas and
SW Louisiana. Promoted to Area Superintendent, Site Support-Safety and Occupational Health in 1994, he began leading in his occupational passion of safety. Having been seriously injured in
a workplace incident himself, it was his goal to try to protect others in the workplace. Under his leadership, his responsible area thrived to a period of 4+ years without a reportable safety incident. In 1996 having served as SRW Safety/Health Superintendent, he received the NPRA Award for Meritorious Safety Performance and the award for Safety Achievement covering more than 3,296,542 hours of injury-free workplace environment! Henry later joined the Texas Safety Association Board of Directors in 1997, believing strongly that, "all injuries and incident can be
prevented." After a distinguished 29-year career highlighted by record-breaking safety performance under his leadership, "HE 3" as he was respectfully called, retired. Henry loved traveling with his wife and family, attending sporting events, visiting and helping friends, playing piano and his bass guitar. He developed a deep love of golf from his time as a caddie along with his brothers as a youth. He enjoyed playing recreational golf and participating in tournaments with his brother Horace, James, Joe, Tony, Gayle, and Pop; winning multiple trophies. You could often find him maintaining his yard and garden, making repairs around his home, helping others,
and taking friends to appointments. Whether you knew him as Henry, Putut, Skinny, Uncle Boo, or just "Uncle", you knew he genuinely cared about YOU! One of his ALL-TIME favorite things to do was view performances and listen to music from his musical queen the "Queen of Soul": Ms. Aretha Franklin!!!
Henry was preceded in death by his parents Bessie Mae Wells Edison and Henry Edison, Jr; and brother Robert Charles Edison (Carolyn). On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Lord called Henry home to rest from his labor.
The love and memories of Henry will remain in the hearts of his wife, Martha Edison; children Jada Edison and Terrell W. Edison, Sr. (Shenea); brother Horace A. Edison and sister, Phyllis M.
