Joyce's Life Story
Joyce Mae Hervey was born May 15, 1937 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Otis Martin and Mae Bell Hayes.
Her family moved to Beaumont when she was a young child. Joyce was a graduate of Charlton Pollard high school. After graduating high school she attended Lamar State Collage where she graduated with a Clerical Degree.
She was baptized at an early age at New Light MBC. She later joined Scott Olive MBC under the leadership of Reverend S. I. Mitchell. She was a Deaconess, active in Mission and sung in the choir.
Joyce loved God, family and people. She put her best in everything she did. She was the business owner of Doll Baby's Crafts for many years. She would make a dress on Sunday mornings for church and would be on time for Sunday School. Her love for fishing and football created great quality family time and some of the fondest memories. She also loved playing the drums and the piano and was extremely good at both. The majority of her work experience was with BISD. She worked in the snack room, cleaned and drove the bus. Her positive impact made on so many future leaders was just simply extraordinary. A perfect example is her adoption of two young men at the school as her sons. They needed her and she stepped in and became legally responsible for them. She sent Randy to OSU and Donnell joined the Navy. As a school bus driver she made the newspaper for saving a child's life when she stopped the bus and performed the Heimlich Maneuver.
Joyce's love for God overshadowed all. Joyce used one tragic night for a single mother and her nine children and turned it into a lifetime of work for the up building of the kingdom of God. This became the first Gospel Musical she promoted in an effort to provide for that family who had lost everything in a fire. She organized the Jefferson County Correctional Facility Music Release Program changing many inmates lives upon release. Also the BISD Bus Barn Community Choir and the MV Choir to name few. Joyce was an active member of the Beaumont Community CB'ers Club and also introduced gospel music that community. She also sang with the Original Gospel Stars. She spent her entire life in service from talking prayer dedications at KJET Radio station on Sunday mornings to bringing gospel singing as far as Canada.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, J.C. Hervey. Brothers, Jesse, Jimmy, Johnny, Joshua, and Joseph; sisters, Jerrie and Josie; one son, Darrell; and one daughter, Dianne.
She leaves to cherish her memories, sisters, Jeraldine and Jannie; brother, Jerome (Ann); children, Desrel, Darris and Deborah, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, two sons by choice, Clarence Gatlin and Reverend Torey Z Doucette; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
