A Life to Remember
Mae Audrey Syers
Welcomed into the World Found Eternal Peace
July 8, 1938 December 9, 2025
The world was blessed with a beautiful soul on July 8, 1938, when Haywood and Georgia Long welcomed their baby girl, Mae Audrey Long, in Voth, Texas. Growing up in Beaumont, Mae's life unfolded into a beautiful story of love, unwavering dedication, and countless proud moments.
From an early age, Mae's faith was her foundation. She was baptized at Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church and walked a path guided by her beliefs. After her time at Charlton Pollard High School, life blessed her with her greatest joy, her son Dondi Flanagan. As a young mother, Mae embraced her role with grace and strength, all while launching a successful career in hospitality with National Linen Service.
In 1970, she brought her ambition and spirit to Houston, where she not only continued her career but also met and married her love, Alfred Syers. Mae's professional life flourished, and she proudly served as a manager in the Linen Department at Methodist Hospital until 1985. Upon retiring, her heart led her back to Beaumont to lovingly care for her father, seamlessly transitioning her nurturing spirit into a new career as a home health caregiver until the late 90s.
Mae's hands were as talented and nurturing as her heart. She found immense joy in her garden, where planting beautiful flowers and plants was her favorite pastime. A new plant was the perfect gift, and she had a God-given talent for helping things grow, often sharing her wisdom with granddaughter. Many also didn't know she was a gifted seamstress, a quiet talent that reflected her creative and loving nature.
On December 9th, at 3:39 A.M., Mae's earthly journey was completed as she peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord, surrounded by the warmth of her family and friends.
She is now reunited in heaven with those who went before her: her parents, Haywood and Georgia Long; her husband, Alfred Syers; her brothers, Walter Long and Haywood Long Jr.; and her beloved grandson, Shaun Anthony Flanagan.
Mae's incredible legacy of love lives on through her devoted family. She is survived by her son, Dondi Flanagan, and his wife, Dianne. Her memory is also treasured by her "Children in Love," whom she held so dear: Tina Long-Richmond (Dennis), Donna Long Cruz, Sherry Deckman, Crystal Long, and her nephew Kevin Long, as well as Porshon Heidelberg (Chris), Shirley Sweed (Johnny), and Chris Johnson (Chenne).
Her pride and joy were her grandchildren: Nachell Flanagan, Sharmonique Autry-Carr (James), Ashley Shantelle Kidd, Paige Hadnot, Mark Dwellingham, Chrishon Heidelberg, and Devin Heidelberg. Her legacy continues to blossom through her great-grandchildren: Kayla, Kye, Jaila, Cameron, Nathan, Amiyah, Pharoah, Brianna, and Basque. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by her kindness.
Mae Audrey Syers will forever be remembered for her steadfast faith, her devotion to her family, and a life truly well-lived. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
