She was born on January 26, 1942, in Norphlet, Arkansas, to Essie and Frank Thompson. She was preceded in death by her parents and three of her five siblings, Johnnie Mae Carter, Shirley Wright, and Lovell Rhodes. She is survived by her sister, Melba Faye Livings of Houston, Texas, and brother Billy Ray Franklin of Orange, Texas. Sister-in-law Rita Thomas (Larry), Lafayette, Louisiana, brother-in-law Adam Bonnet, Galveston, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Sara accepted Christ early in life and attended Smith High School in Northplet, Arkansas. After
graduation, she relocated to Beaumont, Texas. She lived with her favorite Aunt Pearl and attended Lamar University. She worked at Baptist Hospital for over 25 years and at the Beaumont Independent School District.
She married Joseph William Malbrough, and, from that union, they had two children: Joseph (Cara) Malbrough and Kimberly Malbrough, five grandchildren: Breannah Wright, Keerstyn Wright, Rian Wilson, Evan Malbrough, and Jared Malbrough, and five great-grandchildren: Kiona Wilson, Harlem Green, Aaron Semien, Yuri Morris, and Pierre Morris. She was preceded in death by Joseph William Malbrough and was survived by her former spouse, Lee McElroy.
For over 25 Years, she worshiped at Starlight Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. William McCarthy. Then she joined Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church as a charter member on November 29th, 1989, under Pastor Albert Roy Tibbs, and faithfully served in many ministries under the stewardship of Reverend Dr. Delbert A. Mack Sr., including the Cathedral of Faith Adult Choir, the Women's Choir, Women of Purpose Culinary, the Lydia Mission Circle (The Prayer Band), Sunday school, and Vacation Bible School. Cathedral of Faith recognized her as a Senior Saint in March 2023.
In addition to traveling and spending quality time with her family, she played in a city women's
softball league. She was an impeccable dresser and decorator: She loved taking pictures and collecting photographs of family and friends. Her last vacation was a train ride with friends from Houston to New Orleans to Atlanta.
